Senator Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa) and Senator Justin Eichorn (R-Grand Rapids) introduced legislation to lift restrictions on mining in Minnesota and keep household water bills low. The bill is necessary to protect jobs in Northern Minnesota, after the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency attempted to implement strict new water regulations without a compelling scientific justification. The regulations were struck down once by an administrative law judge, but could be reintroduced in a slightly altered form.
“It’s upsetting to see so many good jobs getting sidelined by special interests that don’t understand how important mining is to the way of life in Northern Minnesota,” said Sen. Paul Gazelka. “I graduated from high school in Virginia; I’m an Iron Ranger at heart. This bill is a way of supporting those hardworking folks who deserve every opportunity Minnesota has to offer.”
Sen. Eichorn added, “I love living in Northern Minnesota. I value our strong mining heritage and our beautiful lakes, rivers, and forests. We have a history of taking care of our natural resources, and being good stewards for future generations. I know we can have both mining and clean water. No one who lives here wants it any other way.”
The bill will receive a hearing in an upcoming meeting of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Finance committee.
