Sen. Andrew Mathews Statement on DNR’s Lake Mille Lacs Catch and Release Policy for Walleyes
“I am disappointed by the DNR’s decision to, again, only allow catch-and-release for walleyes on Lake Mille Lacs. For the third summer fishing season in a row, the problems resulting from the mismanagement of the lake continue to impact our local communities, discourage tourism, and hurt our small businesses and resorts. Local experts tell me that the walleye population and overall health of the lake are much better than the DNR portrays it to be.
I have personally reached out to the DNR and asked them to work with me in finding a solution that can open this lake back up. And, I’m asking my local communities around the lake to contact me with their ideas and solutions, as well. This has gone on for long enough. I will continue to work on behalf of the residents, communities, and businesses around Mille Lacs.”
