Legislation authored by Senator David Osmek to authorize construction of the Line 3 Replacement Pipeline passed the Senate Committee on Energy and Utilities Finance. The $2.9 billion pipeline replacement project will fully replace 1,031 miles of pipeline with the newest, safest, and most advanced pipeline technology. The international project will increase production of North American oil production and meet domestic demand.

“Originally ordered to be replaced in the Obama Administration, the Line 3 project has been extensively vetted and meets our state’s regulatory standards,” said Senator Osmek. “There is no more time for costly delays. This project will bring sustainable, good-paying jobs to our state, improve our rural communities, and ensure oil is transported in the safest way possible across Minnesota. The time to get this done is now.”

The original Line 3 pipeline is currently at reduced capacity due to problems with the integrity of the pipeline. The replacement would reduce the risk of environmental hazards and ensure safe oil transportation.  The legislation has passed the House Job Growth and Energy Affordability Policy and Finance Committee and is currently awaiting action on the House floor.

“This legislation safeguards Minnesota from potential environmental safety concerns and improves our economy,” added Senator Osmek. “Further, this application has jumped through thirty different approval hoops over nearly three years and had bipartisan support in the Legislature.  It’s time to end this circus and get this project underway.”
