Sen. Bruce Anderson: Helping shape the leaders of tomorrow

Neighbors,

One of the things I enjoy most about being a legislator is working with students. I am continuously impressed by the thoughtfulness and creativity of the children I meet. Recently I was invited to participate in a mock legislative committee with high school students who were involved with the Minnesota Student Statesmanship Institute (SSI). The students came from all backgrounds – homeschool, private school, and public school.

The exercise simulated the process of a Senate bruce anderson studentsCommittee, which I presided over. The students played the part of senators. They were divided into two groups and charged with debating two prominent bills. The goal was to provide a realistic look at the legislative process, while strengthening their world view, sharpening their debating skills, and emphasizing teamwork.

The committee process was incredibly realistic – the students followed standard senate protocols, invited real testifiers, offered amendments, and more.

bruce anderson students1I was especially impressed that the students did not debate outlandish, pie-in-the-sky ideas. They debated real, complex bills that have actually been introduced in the legislature in previous years, including school safety and opioid abuse. These are issues facing the state right now, and their perspective was fascinating.

It gives me hope to see so many engaged students taking an active interest in the issues of the day. The students, to a person, were thoughtful, clever, and articulate, and I know they have bright futures in front of them. I look forward to working with these future leaders again one day soon.

Sincerely,

Bruce
