The Minnesota Senate majority has announced that Senator David Senjem (R-Rochester) will remain as chairman of the Senate Capital Investment Committee for the 2019 and 2020 legislative sessions. Senator Senjem has been a member of the committee since 2002, serving as chairman during the 2011-2012 and 2017-2018 legislative sessions.
The role of the Capital Investment Committee is to make decisions on the funding of public building and infrastructure projects across Minnesota. Projects funded by the committee include roads and bridges, wastewater infrastructure, colleges and universities, correctional facilities, state parks and trails, clean water and wildlife habitats, flood control provisions, and more. In 2018, the committee granted $1.5 billion in funding for projects across the state.
Under Senator Senjem’s leadership, members of the committee will study thousands of projects and crisscross the state to take public testimony. The goal of the committee is to make the hard decisions on Minnesota’s most pressing needs and assemble a responsible funding bill, recognizing that wants and needs always surpass the available financial resources.
“Solid public infrastructure is the backbone of Minnesota’s quality of life and economy,” said Senator Senjem. “My job is to bring a bill forward that is big enough to meet the needs and small enough to be affordable, no easy task.”
