Monday night, Wendy Haavisto received the Honorary State FFA Degree. The purpose of the degree program is to recognize individuals who render outstanding service to the agricultural education ‒ FFA program. Haavisto has served as Senator Gary Dahms’s (R-Redwood Falls) legislative assistant since his election in 2010.
“I am humbled that the FFA chose me as a recipient of an honorary degree,” Haavisto said. “It is truly an honor to be recognized by this amazing organization.”
This year, 21 people were recognized with the Honorary Minnesota FFA Degree during the annual awards ceremony of the 90th Minnesota FFA Convention at the University of Minnesota ‒ Twin Cities. Senator Dahms was a 2013 recipient of the award.
Wendy Haavisto was raised in the rural communities of Pine City, Gaylord, and Redwood Falls. Her grandparents were dairy farmers, and her parents leased land to many farmers over the years. Through these experiences, Haavisto developed a love and appreciation of agriculture.
In her legislative assistant position, Haavisto has educated her colleagues (especially those from the Twin Cities area) on the importance of the agriculture industry to Minnesota’s economy and the practices of farmers as they relate to Minnesota’s ecology. She also ensures Senator Dahms’ availability for anything related to the FFA.
“It is important for young people to carry on our rural traditions,” added Haavisto. “Agriculture is one of those traditions, and we must continue to educate urban Minnesotans about the industry and encourage their enthusiasm for it.”
The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. Visit www.mnffa.org for more information. Photo courtesy of Minnesota FFA Foundation.
