The Declaration of Independence, declared by twelve of the thirteen colonies of the United States of America, was adopted by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776.  Two hundred and forty years later, our free nation continues to be the longest on-going Constitutional Republic in the history of the world.

As we approach this year’s Fourth of July celebration, I am reminded of a story regarding one of our Founders, John Adams, who made a noteworthy prediction on the spirit of the American Revolution in a letter written to his wife, Abigail, the day after Congress approved the Declaration.

As the story goes, Adams wrote his wife two letters on that day; the first was short and concise, jubilant that the Declaration had been approved. The second was much longer and more pensive, giving serious consideration to what had been done that day.

Adams cautiously noted: “This day will be the most memorable epic in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival”.

And he was right. The Fourth of July is a celebration not only of the events that freed America from colonial rule over two centuries ago, but of the continued freedom and prosperity we enjoy that makes our nation a beacon of hope for people from continents around the world.

The principles of our Founding Fathers continue to guide us. But it is up to each generation to keep the spirit of the American Revolution alive and well.

Celebrate our big day and also tell your family how American ideals are important. Help the children understand so their generation will be prepared to carry it forward. As another patriot said, “We are always one generation away from losing our freedom.”
