The Minnesota Senate today authorized federal funding to be used to construct, equip, and furnish the Bemidji Veterans home project. The provision was included in a larger State Government policy bill that passed with bipartisan support. Senator Justin Eichorn (R-Grand Rapids) played a key role in securing the necessary state funding for the project in 2018 and released the following statement:

“A lot of great work has been done to get this project funded and I am beyond delighted to play a part in helping support our veterans,” said Eichorn. “It is extremely satisfying to clear this final legislative hurdle so we can build this housing to support those who have made tremendous sacrifices for our country. Getting this project done has been one of my top priorities in my tenure in the legislature, and it’s gratifying knowing we will be making a difference in the lives of many of the veterans in our community.”

Senator Eichorn played a key role in securing the $12.4 million in state funding for the project in the 2018 Bonding bill and has introduced a resolution this session calling on the federal government to fund their share of the project. Earlier this month the federal government announced they would provide the necessary funding for the project. Currently, veterans need to drive 128-miles from Bemidji to Fergus Falls for the nearest Veterans Home.

The overall bill passed both bodies of the legislature on Monday and awaits the Governor’s signature. Once the bill is signed, available funds will be immediately appropriated for the project.
