Senate Tax Committee Chairwoman Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) today laid out a series of proposals to address the top issues on Minnesotans’ minds. The agenda would address public safety, helping Minnesota afford everyday life, and getting our students back on track with in-person learning, tutoring, and empowering parents.
“I consistently hear from my constituents about how things seem to have gotten off course,” Sen. Nelson said. “We must focus on safe communities, empowering Minnesotans and driving economic growth, and aiding our students in their recovery from Covid learning loss.”
One of the government’s core obligations is to keep our communities safe. “It is high time to support our police and peace officers, provide due justice to victims of crimes, and focus our government on its duty to protect its citizens,” said Sen. Nelson.
The state’s projected $7.7 billion surplus will be one of the most discussed items of the upcoming session. Inflationary increases are taking even more out of high-taxed Minnesotan’s pockets.
“It is time for tax relief targeted toward working Minnesotans and seniors to help them afford everyday life,” said Sen. Nelson. “The Senate Tax Committee’s priority is permanent, on-going tax cuts for lower and middle-class Minnesotans and ending the state’s punitive and regressive tax on senior citizens’ social security, and tax credits to aid parents.”
Finally, the closure of schools due to COVID has been an eye-opening experience for parents across the state. “As a former teacher, I understand the stresses facing parents and educators,” said Sen. Nelson. “We must help our students recover from Covid learning loss, keep them safely in school and empower parents as their children’s first and most influential teachers.”
“No campaign gimmicks, just permanent savings for Minnesotans,” concluded Sen. Nelson.
