Howe, Senate approve $100 million in tax relief

Yesterday the Senate passed a tax bill that provides more than $100 million in tax relief for Minnesotans, and brings Minnesota in line with recent federal tax changes. Senator Jeff Howe (R-Rockville) issued the following statement:

“It was good to get this bill tax passed off the Senate Floor, but this bill doesn’t do enough. Minnesotans are looking for long-term and tangible tax relief. Families are struggling to make ends meet, and with rising prices in every aspect of life, tax relief is more important than ever. I believe we missed an opportunity to eliminate the income tax on social security income. We need to get serious about providing permanent tax relief.”

Notably, Senate Republicans offered two amendments that were rejected by Senate Democrats:

  • An amendment to eliminate the tax on Social Security benefits
  • An amendment to eliminate the first-tier income tax bracket
