The Minnesota Senate on Monday approved a supplemental Jobs finance bill under a cloud of controversy, with the deciding vote cast by Democrat Senator Nicole Mitchell who is currently charged with felony first degree burglary as well as the subject of a forthcoming ethics investigation. The decisive vote cast a shadow over the legislative process and raised questions about the legitimacy of the bill’s passage and the Senate’s work for the remainder of the 2024 legislative session.
Minnesota State Senator Bill Lieske (R-Lonsdale) issued the following statement:
“Sen. Mitchell’s actions have brought the Senate into dishonor and disrepute. Allowing her to cast deciding votes while facing a felony charge and an ethics investigation calls into question the legitimacy of every bill we pass. It is unacceptable. If Democrats will not protect the integrity of the Senate, then I will at least protect the integrity of my vote. While I will not abdicate my responsibilities, I also will not vote affirmatively alongside Senator Mitchell on any bill. I will not tarnish our district by voting with Sen. Mitchell.
“Her conduct needs to be thoroughly investigated quickly and efficiently to protect the integrity of the institution. I hope the Democrats join us in that effort soon.”
