Coleman Supports Protecting Consumers from Undisclosed Junk Fees

Senator Coleman (R-Waconia) supported legislation on Wednesday to protect consumers from hidden junk fees that get tied into final purchase prices right before payment. These fees often cause significant price increases for products and services.

“Families are struggling to keep up with skyrocketing price increases for nearly every product these days,” said Senator Coleman. “Requiring more transparency for Minnesotans during the purchasing process will protect families from sticker shock and hidden fees.”

The Federal Trade Commission is currently reviewing junk fees. Should they weigh in with a federal rule or law, it would supersede Minnesota state law.

The bill passed the Senate with broad bipartisan support and will be brought up in a conference committee to work out differences with the House version passed on April 11, 2024.
