Senator Rich Draheim (R-Madison Lake) has announced the distribution of the second round of emergency aid to nursing homes in southern Minnesota. This funding is part of the $300 million bipartisan package secured by Republicans at the end of the 2023 legislative session to address the critical financial crisis facing Minnesota’s nursing homes.
“I’m pleased to announce that nursing homes in our district are receiving another round of financial support that they desperately need,” Senator Draheim said. “This aid will help ensure that our elderly and vulnerable residents continue to receive quality care in their communities.”
The funding comes at a crucial time for Minnesota’s nursing homes, which have faced severe financial challenges in recent years. Over 50 facilities have closed statewide, with many more at risk of shutting their doors.
“Republicans have long recognized the urgent need to support our nursing homes,” Sen. Draheim said. “While we pushed for even higher levels of assistance, the compromise we eventually reached with Democrats represents a significant step forward in finally addressing the crisis.”
The emergency aid package includes direct grants, wage increases, and a workforce incentive fund. Nursing facilities can use these grants to improve their financial health and maintain quality care for residents.
Nursing Facility Grants totaling $173.5 million were split into two payments in August 2023 and August 2024. The first round of funding was issued last August; the second round of funding was issued at the beginning of August 2024.
Senator Draheim emphasized that while this aid is crucial, Republicans believe more support is needed. “In 2022, Senate Republicans approved a $1 billion emergency nursing home aid bill, which unfortunately didn’t become law due to resistance from Democrats and Governor Walz. We’ll continue to fight for the level of support that nursing homes truly need.”
