Gruenhagen: Satanist display at the state Capitol

Friends and neighbors,

The Minnesota State Capitol is now hosting a Satanic “holiday display” just days before Christmas. The display was set up by a group calling themselves the Minnesota Satanists, who celebrated their actions by shouting “HAIL SATAN!” on social media. On December 18, the display was briefly taken down but then restored

While the Capitol has long hosted meaningful holiday symbols like the Christmas Tree, Nativity scene, and soon a Menorah, this new display feels like an insult to the values and traditions so many Minnesotans hold dear. Governor Walz’s administration approved the permit for this display, and people are rightfully asking why such an offensive symbol was allowed. Remember: Christmas is an official federal holiday. That is why those displays are welcome in the Capitol. There are no such holidays for satanism, for good reason.

This isn’t about celebrating different beliefs – it is about drawing attention in a way that divides and disrespects.

Christmas is a season of hope, kindness, and togetherness. The Capitol should reflect those values, not host displays that mock them.

God Bless,
