Senator Bruce Anderson: County leaders sound alarm over property tax hikes due to the governor’s budget

Friends and neighbors,

This week, at both a press conference and a committee hearing, county commissioners from across the state sounded the alarm over Governor Walz’s proposal to shift $460 million in costs to counties through the Department of Human Services budget. Commissioners in attendance cautioned that transferring these costs to counties could force local governments to increase property taxes by around 7% to 9% to cover the extra expenses.

Governor Walz’s proposal seeks to tackle a projected $5.1 billion state budget deficit by 2029. However, what may seem like savings at the state level is merely a cost shift, forcing counties to raise property taxes on families and businesses.

Sales tax exemption for Delano’s Spirit Park project

My bill, SF 1155, which would provide a construction sales tax exemption for the City of Delano’s Spirit Park community center, was recently heard in the Senate Taxes Committee. The estimated material costs for this project are $7.2 million, with $4.5 million subject to sales tax.

This legislation would help reduce costs and support the development of a valuable community facility.

I’ll continue to share updates on this bill as the session progresses!

Constituents at the Capitol

We had many great constituent meetings this week!

This week, I had the opportunity to meet with Tracey Hester and Robyn Rowen, who are strong advocates for rural pharmacies and the critical role they play in our communities. I also connected with Dr. Corey Martin from Maple Lake, who visited for Physicians’ Day at the Capitol to discuss important healthcare issues. Additionally, I met with local school representatives advocating for fair funding to ensure our students and educators have the resources they need to succeed.

My office is always open to constituents, and I invite you to stop by the next time you’re in St. Paul! Your input is invaluable as we work together to address the issues that matter most to our community.
