Gruenhagen: A surge in illegal immigrants signing up for free healthcare

Friends and neighbors,

Last biennium, Governor Walz and the Democrats made illegal immigrants eligible for free taxpayer-funded health care through MinnesotaCare. They said it would be a small program – projections from the Walz administration expected about 5,800 signups in the first year, at a Minnesota taxpayer cost of approximately $45.5 million.

In just three months, more than 17,000 illegal immigrants have already signed up for taxpayer-funded healthcare. That’s nearly triple what they predicted, and it’s only April.

Surge in illegal immigrants enrolled in MNCare

The cost to taxpayers? Already $134 million and climbing.

This program doesn’t get any help from the federal government, every penny comes from Minnesota taxpayers. That includes you, me, and every hardworking family trying to keep up with their own expensive healthcare costs.

Meanwhile, Democrats are proposing cuts to nursing homes, disability services, and even student funding. They’re talking about raising taxes and fees on all of us. Yet they refuse to rollback any benefits to illegal immigrants.

Minnesota is staring down a $6 billion budget deficit, and instead of putting Minnesotans first, Democrats are pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into a program that puts illegal immigrants ahead of our own seniors, children, and families. That’s not just unfair. It’s wrong.

I recently filmed a video talking about this issue, please take a moment to watch it here: https://youtu.be/vAlbKX4FXno

We need to return to common sense. We need to put Minnesotans first.

Please let the Governor and Democrat legislators know that this is unacceptable. We need legal immigration. But giving away free benefits to people who are here illegally while cutting support for Minnesotans is not the right approach.

Thank you for staying engaged, and God Bless.
