The Minnesota Supreme Court today announced a verdict in the court case between Governor Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature. The Court overturned a Ramsey County District Court decision which found Gov. Dayton exceeded his authority by vetoing funding for the legislature. The Supreme Court’s decision effectively reinstates the governor’s veto.
Senator Michelle Benson (R-Ham Lake) issued the following statement:
“I am incredibly disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision today. The governor’s veto was nothing less than an attack on the very foundation of our representative democracy. With their ruling, the Supreme Court has set a precedent that any future governor can coerce obedience from the legislature – or for that matter, from the Courts – by simply threatening to veto their funding. This is troubling and dangerous for every future budget discussion.”
