Unlocking the Potential of Our Students – Financial Literacy in High Schools
Understanding personal finance is crucial for students to have successful futures. It is a critical life skill that every student should have. Unfortunately, many students graduate high school without basic knowledge of personal finance. This session my colleagues and I introduced legislation that would require Minnesota high school students to pass an online personal finance class in 12th grade as part of their graduation requirements. The proposed course would help students learn practical skills to manage their finances and prepare for their future.
This bill will equip our students with the tools they need to make smart decisions about their financial futures. This will not only benefit our students but also our communities and our state as a whole!
The course would cover topics such as creating a household budget, taking out loans and accruing debt, how interest works, home mortgages, how to file taxes, the impact of student loan debt, and how to read a paycheck and payroll deductions.
Local Students Shine in St. Paul
Last week a team of students from Cambridge and North Branch High School competed in the 17th Annual Minnesota State ProStart Competition at the RiverCentre, just down the hill from the Capitol.
ProStart is a proven, nationally recognized educational curriculum that introduces students to all aspects of the hospitality industry through coursework, hands-on-learning, industry field trips, employment experiences and mentorships. It is a program of the National Restaurant Association, coordinated in Minnesota by the Hospitality Minnesota Education Foundation. Currently, more than 5,000 students at 90 Minnesota high schools are enrolled in ProStart.

Priority: Public Safety
The city of Wyoming is asking for the state’s help in building a new public safety facility for both fire and police services. The city desperately needs a safety center to meet current policing standards the decaying 50-year-old pole building does not meet.
