Friends and neighbors,
Let’s talk a little bit about what you can expect to see from your legislature during this 2024 legislative session.
This isn’t a budget year, and there isn’t much money left in the state’s accounts because Democrats recklessly spent the entire $19 billion surplus last year. We’re also looking at a budget deficit in the near future due to their budgeting, so I wouldn’t expect many, if any, big spending items to come through the legislature this year.
There are a few big issues that need to be addressed, including the unpopular new flag and seal designs, the bad law that Democrats passed last year regarding school resource officers, fixing mistakes they made in last year’s tax bill, and more.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll talk a bit more about each of those, but I wanted to focus on school resource officers this week
SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS – DEMOCRATS PUSH A PARTISAN BILL TO CORRECT THEIR MISTAKE
One pressing issue is the consequences of last session’s legislation removing School Resource Officers (SROs). This decision caused SROs to be pulled from schools across the state, and has raised widespread concerns among school leaders, police, and families about student and teacher safety. Not only are SROs important role models who build great relationships with students, but without them present on campus schools feel less secure. The message from parents and officials has been clear – taking away SROs jeopardizes the wellbeing of students and teachers
Unfortunately, instead of good-faith efforts to respond community concerns, we’ve seen political posturing from the majority party and dismissal of key stakeholders’ voices.
The simple, common-sense solution is reversing last session’s SRO law. Yet Democrats refuse to do that, and are delaying and complicating an issue that needs to be solved right away.
There is still time to do the right thing here. The bill stalled in the House and there are more stops in the Senate, so please contact your representatives and senators to tell them you would simply like to see last year’s law repealed. The old law was working before, and it will work again.
