Friends and neighbors,
On March 6, we received the annual February budget forecast. Unfortunately, it is bad news for Minnesota taxpayers.
In December, the projection was that Minnesota would have a $5.1 billion deficit. That number has grown worse in the last three months. Now the projected deficit is up to $6 billion.
The reckless spending of the Democrats the last two years has driven Minnesota straight into a financial crisis.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t an accident, and it can’t be blamed on anything in Washington. It’s simple math. Democrats grew state spending by 40% in just two years, blowing through the entire $18 billion surplus and raising taxes by $10 billion. Even after taking so much from taxpayers, it still wasn’t enough to cover their out-of-control spending — right now, we are still spending $2.1 billion more than we take in.
It’s unsustainable, and Minnesota families will be the ones stuck paying for it.
Democrats will of course try to spin this and deflect blame to President Trump. Don’t buy it. If had a different president tomorrow, the state’s budget would look exactly the same because Minnesota’s deficit problem is homegrown. This is a Democrat deficit, plain and simple. The only way out of this mess is to get spending under control and to start respecting the taxpayers again.
