In response to the decision by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to issue a draft permit for PolyMet Mining’s proposed Iron Range copper-nickel mining operation, Senate Leader Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa) issued the following statement:
“As a former Iron Ranger, I could not be more pleased to see the DNR issue this draft permit and allow the project to move closer to the finish line. Polymet Mining has spent the better part of a decade facing extreme regulatory scrutiny and it is past time to allow PolyMet to move forward with their plans.
Communities in northern Minnesota are thirsting for the sort of economic development, job growth, and investment that responsible mining will bring to an area with an already-rich history of mining. PolyMet Mining has spent years consulting with residents, stakeholders, and government officials, going to significant lengths in making sure their mining operation will follow the highest environmental and safety standards. I am confident PolyMet will continue to demonstrate its commitment to our state’s natural beauty and unparalleled resources.
While there are more hurdles to come, this represents a big win for Minnesota. I am hopeful the remaining regulatory processes will move swiftly and that this project will get off the ground soon.”
Senator Paul Gazelka is the leader of the Minnesota Senate. He is in his third term serving Senate District 9, which includes communities in Cass, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties.
