The Minnesota Supreme Court today announced a verdict in the court case between Governor Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature. The Court overturned a Ramsey County District Court decision which found Gov. Dayton exceeded his authority by vetoing funding for the legislature. The Supreme Court’s decision effectively reinstates the governor’s veto.
Senator Mike Goggin (R-Red Wing) issued the following statement:
“The Court’s decision was both surprising and disappointing. With their ruling, the court has set the precedent that any future governor can defund another branch of government just to get his or her way. This is sets a very dangerous precedent for future budget discussions. I will continue to support solutions that protect Minnesotans’ constitutional right to three branches of government.”
