Gruenhagen: Automatic voter registration opens door to fraud

Friends and neighbors,

Two recent changes Democrats made to Minnesota laws have created a scenario that potentially threatens the integrity of our elections and opens the door to voter fraud.

You are likely already aware that last year Minnesota Democrats passed legislation allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. Many of us warned that without proper safeguards, these licenses could be misused for purposes beyond driving.

Fast forward to 2024. Minnesota has now implemented an automatic voter registration system that automatically registers individuals to vote when they obtain or renew their driver’s license. At first glance, it seems like a convenient way to increase voter participation.

Here’s the problem: If illegal immigrants can obtain driver’s licenses, and anyone getting a driver’s license is automatically registered to vote, we’ve created a system that could register those illegal immigrants to vote. This is not just a theoretical concern – it’s a very real possibility that could undermine the integrity of our elections.

Democrats will dismiss those fears. But given the Walz administration’s track record of failing to prevent fraud over and over, Minnesotans have every right to be concerned. From Feeding our Future to the frontline worker program to Medicaid fraud and much more, the Walz administration has repeatedly failed to implement even the most basic safeguards and oversight protections for Minnesota citizens. In fact, since 2019, Gov. Walz and his administration have lost more than $450 million of your tax dollars due to fraud – and counting!

If the Democrats and Gov. Walz cannot prevent fraud in these programs, how can we trust them to prevent illegal immigrants from registering and voting?

Every fraudulent vote cast diminishes the voice of legitimate voters and erodes public trust in our elections. The right to vote is a cornerstone of our democratic constitutional republic, and maintaining the integrity of our elections should be a top priority for all elected officials — regardless of party affiliation.
