Gruenhagen: Don’t be fooled by Gov. Walz’s claims of responsible budgeting

Friends and neighbors,

Today, Governor Walz unveiled his 2025 budget proposal. He portrayed himself as a smart and responsible steward of Minnesotans’ tax dollars. Of course, we lived through the last two years of Democrat one-party rule, so we know the truth: Over the past two years, they unsustainably increased state spending by a staggering 40%. They spent all of the $19 billion surplus, raised $10 billion in new taxes, and now their reckless approach has left us staring at a $5 billion budget deficit just around the corner. He may try to pretend he is in favor of “responsible budgeting,” but do not be fooled.

The actions of Gov. Walz and Democrats in the legislature the last two years put extra financial strain squarely on every Minnesotan, from the grocery store to the gas pump.

His plan this year is not much different. It is built on higher fees, tax hikes, and cuts to essential services like special education transportation, disability support, and nursing homes. These would be especially painful cuts for families already struggling with inflation and rising costs.

Just to be clear, Gov. Walz’s budget is a nonstarter and will not become law. But it does give you a sense of his priorities.

I also wanted to share with you the statement from Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson. I echo his comments.

“We need a budget that puts Minnesotans first, not government first. The Governor’s proposal today missed that opportunity. True budgeting reform will protect those most in need as much as it protects the taxpayers’ investments.”

Minnesotans deserve a budget that values hard work and prioritizes essential services without adding to your financial burdens. We’ll continue to push for solutions that deliver real relief—not more reckless spending.”
