Friends and neighbors,
From the start of the 2025 legislative session, House Democrats have refused to show up for work. They got caught trying to cheat in an election and had a member disqualified. Then they tried to illegally call a special election for that seat, which the courts tossed out. Then threw a tantrum when Republicans were about to take power and refused to show up for work. (They did, however, continue to collect paychecks.)
In the end, they caved. Late Wednesday night, House Republicans and Democrats announced they reached a deal where House Republicans will hold the speakership for the full two-year term, lead every committee until the March special election, and maintain sole control of the new fraud investigation committee — no matter what happens in the new March special election for the vacated seat.
What this means in practice is that no bill will pass without Republican approval, period. No funny business. No games. The Democrats’ trifecta officially is over.
The Senate has been in business, governing for the last three weeks. House Republicans have bee coming to work every day, waiting to govern. Now House Democrats will finally show up for work again. We can finally get back to addressing the things Minnesotans actually care about: stopping fraud, making life more affordable, getting reckless spending under control, and helping our students.
