The Minnesota Supreme Court recently made a ruling that once again puts law-abiding gun owners at risk of becoming criminals. In State v. Blevins, the court decided you must try to run away before even showing a weapon to scare off an attacker. This unprecedented decision goes against common sense and your right to self-defense.
Here is what happened: A man was convicted of assault for brandishing a machete after being threatened. The court said he should have tried to escape first, even though he didn’t hurt anyone. This ruling means that if you are attacked and pull out your gun to deter the threat, you could be charged with a crime if you did not try to flee beforehand.
This decision makes Minnesota less safe. It forces victims to retreat, not just before defending themselves, but even before trying to scare away an attacker – putting victims in even more danger. It ignores the reality that simply showing a weapon can often stop an attack without violence.
