Friends and neighbors,
First things first. On Monday, President Donald Trump took the oath of office and officially returned to the White House. It marks a bright new chapter for America, and I stand firmly behind his agenda to strengthen our nation and uphold the values we share.
As his second term begins, I ask you all to join me in lifting up President Trump, Vice President Vance, and the entire administration in prayer. May they be guided with wisdom, courage, and strength as they take on the challenges ahead. I sincerely believe our best days are yet to come.
I want to share information about two important court decisions from this weekend that affect the Legislature.
Senator Mitchell’s trial postponed
A Becker County judge on Friday granted Democrat Senator Nicole Mitchell’s request to postpone her felony burglary trial until after the legislative session. The ruling that raises serious concerns about fairness and accountability.
While Republicans have consistently been vocal about the need for Sen. Mitchell to step aside given her behavior, calls for her resignation have come from both sides of the aisle. Her request to delay her trial is an inappropriate use of her position — especially considering the nature of these charges. And while the law gives her that option, she could have, and should have, chosen to waive her privilege and resolve the case right away.
We cannot continue to allow Sen. Mitchell to tarnish the integrity of the legislature. The Senate has a duty to uphold the highest standards of conduct. Last session, Democrats failed that test, but we will keep pushing this year.
Gov. Walz illegally called special election for vacant House seat
The Minnesota Supreme Court also ruled Friday that Governor Walz illegally and prematurely called for a special election for House District 40B. This is the seat that is vacant because the elected Democrat was found to be living outside the district.
The Court’s unanimous decision reflects the clarity of the state statute. The previous election date of January 28 is now void. I hope and expect the governor will quickly call a new election, following state law, to ensure District 40B residents have representation at the Capitol.
As always, please reach out if you have questions or concerns. It is an honor to serve you.
God Bless,
