At the end of the 2017 session, Gov. Dayton attempted to use his line item veto authority to eliminate funding for the House and Senate. A Ramsey County Court today ruled the governor’s veto unconstitutional, and restored funding for the legislature. Sen. Dan Hall (R-Burnsville) released the following statement on the court’s action.
“One need not be a constitutional scholar to understand the governor’s action was a clear violation of the Separation of Powers Clause of Minnesota’s Constitution. I’m pleased the court came to a speedy decision, and I encourage Gov. Dayton to accept the court’s ruling so the legislature can continue providing crucial services to the citizens of Minnesota.”
