In recognition of his legislative commitment to promote homeownership across the state, Sen. Jerry Relph (R-St. Cloud) has been honored with the ‘2017 Housing Leadership Award’. The award, which was presented by Housing First Minnesota, an association of more than 1,200 home builders, remodelers, developers, and industry suppliers, highlights a commitment to promoting durable, affordable homeownership for Minnesota families.
“It is an honor to be recognized for my work in this important policy area,” said Sen. Relph. “Our region and state is home to many strong communities and homeownership is a fundamental part of that success. I pledge to continue to be an advocate for policy that encourages smart, cost-effective homeownership for individuals and families across the state.”
“This recognition reflects Sen. Relph’s commitment to a vibrant housing market that ties together the communities of our great state,” said David Siegel, executive director of Housing First Minnesota. “It recognizes his work through the 2017 legislative session to promote homeownership in communities people love, at a price families can afford.”
During the 2017 legislative session, several key initiatives for promoting homeownership were signed into law. Recognizing the importance to Minnesotans in the housing market, Sen. Relph was an ardent supporter of legislation to encourage condominium and townhome development, the creation of a First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account, needed updates to regulatory and industrial fees, and other significant pieces of legislation.
“There is a certain sense of pride that comes with owning your home. That, along with dedication to your neighbors and pride in your community make accessible homeownership something we should all encourage,” Sen. Relph continued. “Along with striking a balance of safety, resource protection, and affordability in housing, I will continue this important work on behalf of citizens across our state.”
Sen. Relph is in his first term representing Senate District 14, which includes St. Cloud, Waite Park, St. Augusta, and other communities in Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns counties. Sen. Relph serves as vice chair of the Aging and Long-Term Care Policy Committee.
