Recognizing her advocacy in promoting affordable homeownership across the state, Sen. Karin Housley (R-St. Mary’s Point) has been honored with the ‘2017 Housing Leadership Award’. The award, which was presented by Housing First Minnesota, an association of more than 1,200 home builders, remodelers, developers, and industry suppliers, highlights a commitment to promoting durable, affordable homeownership for Minnesota families.
“It is an honor to be recognized by Housing First Minnesota,” said Sen. Housley. “This is an area of critical importance to the wellbeing of our state. Homeownership is a cornerstone of strong communities, and I’m proud to advocate for policy that encourages smart, cost-effective homeownership for individuals and families across the state.”
During the 2017 legislative session, several key initiatives for promoting homeownership were signed into law. Recognizing the importance to Minnesotans in the housing market, Sen. Housley was an ardent supporter of legislation to encourage condominium and townhome development, the creation of a First-Time Homebuyer Savings Account, needed updates to regulatory and industrial fees, and other significant pieces of legislation.
“This recognition reflects Sen. Housley’s commitment to a vibrant housing market that ties together the communities of our great state,” said David Siegel, executive director of Housing First Minnesota. “It recognizes her work through the 2017 legislative session to promote homeownership in communities people love, at a price families can afford.”
“Owning a home comes with a sense of honor to yourself, dedication to your neighbors, and pride in your community,” Sen. Housley continued. “We need to encourage those ideals in Minnesota, while striking a balance of safety, resource protection, and affordability in housing. I pledge to continue this important work on behalf of citizens across our state.”
Sen. Karin Housley, of St. Mary’s Point, is in her second term representing Senate District 39, which includes Stillwater, Forest Lake, Lake Elmo, and other communities in Chisago and Washington counties. She serves as chairwoman of the Aging and Long-Term Care Policy Committee.
