By: SENATOR JOHN JASINSKI
As we draw the 2024 legislative session to a close, I am deeply disappointed and concerned about the direction our legislative process has gone under Democrat one-party control.
The last two years have been marked by a complete disregard for bipartisanship, transparency, and the exchange of ideas. The Democrats, holding complete control of our government, have taken advantage of their majority to push through their extreme agenda with little regard for the rules we all abide by and, more importantly, the voices of nearly half of Minnesotans who did not choose Democrats to represent them.
Throughout this session, we saw repeated delays, light floor sessions, and extended breaks that wasted valuable time. Priority conference committee agreements were left waiting until the final weekend. Then, in a move that can only be described as a blatant power grab, the Democrats introduced a colossal 1,431-page bill just an hour before the required adjournment. This bill, which appears to be filled with controversial and extreme proposals, was brought to a vote immediately with zero debate – silencing the minority party and, by extension, your voice and the voices of half the state.
What is most alarming is how they executed their scheme. Senate rules and procedures were flagrantly ignored. Most legislators did not have access to the bill; it wasn’t available online and physical copies could not be found. This lack of transparency is not just a procedural misstep; it is a direct attack on the integrity of our legislative body and a betrayal of the trust placed in us by our constituents.
The consequences of this one-party control are deeply troubling. Relationships that have taken years to build have been strained, maybe beyond repair. The actions of the Democrats this session have not only damaged these relationships but have also set a dangerous precedent for future sessions. Good relationships are the bedrock of everything we do here. Without them, it is incredibly difficult for either party to govern effectively.
I am profoundly upset and frustrated not just as a member of the minority party but as someone who cares deeply about the integrity and reputation of the legislature. You deserve better. You deserve a government that listens, respects diverse viewpoints, and works transparently for our shared goals. Instead, you received a single-party government that cut out any disagreeing voices. Transparently and accountability have been thrown out the window in favor of an extreme agenda.
The consequences of the Democrats’ actions extend far beyond the Capitol. Minnesotans are paying more for groceries, gas, and taxes. Schools are feeling serious budget pressures, and businesses are struggling under new mandates. The Democrat trifecta has wasted $19 billion of your money and raised taxes another $10 billion, with little to show for it in terms of tangible benefits for everyday Minnesotans.
We should all take a moment to reflect on the consequences of one-party control and the importance of a balanced, collaborative government. As we look to the future, one thing I know for certain is that what we have seen over the last two years cannot continue. We must restore integrity to the legislature and rebuild a government that focuses on relationships and working together.
Thank you for your continued support, questions, and feedback. It is my privilege to serve you.
Sincerely,
John Jasinski
Minnesota State Senator
