Friends and neighbors –
As we approach Veterans Day, I hope we can all take a moment to reflect on the appreciation and respect we owe to the men and women who have served this nation in our armed forces. Their courage, dedication, and sacrifice deserve our deepest gratitude.
Their service represents a level of sacrifice that often goes unseen and underappreciated. From missed birthdays and holidays to the simple emotional and physical toll of service, these are small examples of the sacrifices they make for the freedom and safety we enjoy each day. And it’s not just the veterans – their families sacrifice too. They endure long periods of separation and the constant worry for their loved one’s safety. The commitment to serve is a commitment made by the entire family.
That is why I am so proud that in the Minnesota Legislature, support for veterans has always received strong bipartisan backing. Regardless of party, we all recognize the debt we owe to those who defend our freedoms.
This year, we passed a comprehensive veterans bill that underscores our collective commitment to supporting our brave servicemen and women. The overwhelming support the bill received is a testament to the universal respect and support for our veterans.
It included things like increased funding and eligibility for post-9/11 service bonuses; funding for operations of new veteran homes in Bemidji, Montevideo, and Preston; enlistment and retention bonuses to ensure a strong future for our military forces; support for Camp Bliss, which offers therapy and activities for veterans and their caretakers; and more.
This Veterans Day, let’s renew our commitment to those who have worn our nation’s uniform. As we look forward to a future of peace and prosperity, let us never forget those who fought to make it possible. To all veterans – thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering dedication to our great nation.
