Lieske: Democrats again protect Sen. Mitchell

To the editor:

On January 27, I supported a motion to expel Democrat Senator Nicole Mitchell, who is on trial for felony first-degree burglary. This was the second time Republicans made this motion, and for the second time, Senate Democrats protected her.

This isn’t about politics; it’s about doing what’s right. It’s deeply disappointing that Democrats chose to protect one of their own instead of protecting the Senate’s integrity.

Senator Mitchell’s case is not a small one. It is extremely serious. She is charged with felony first-degree burglary after police caught her breaking into her stepmother’s home. She was dressed in black, hiding in the basement, and had items that weren’t hers. While everyone deserves due process, we also have a responsibility to protect public trust. Senator Mitchell’s constituents deserve honesty and accountability.

I have been asked why Senator Mitchell’s case is different than President Trump’s. The difference is clear: President Trump was a private citizen during his trial. Voters knew about his charges and still chose him to be their president. Senator Mitchell’s constituents haven’t had that choice. If she wants to try to run for office again, that’s up to her — but her district deserves to make that decision.

As senators, we are held to a higher standard. When public trust is broken, we must act swiftly. I hope my Democrat colleagues will soon reconsider and join us in protecting the integrity of the Senate. That’s what we should have done from the start.

Sincerely,

Senator Bill Lieske
