ST. PAUL – On behalf of the Markey family, Senator Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove) joined the Markey family in calling for Judge Michael Burns to reject a plea deal created by Hennepin County Mary Moriarty, involving defendant Husayn Braveheart. Braveheart is charged for second-degree murder in the death of Steven Markey during a failed carjacking. Braveheart is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on October 23.
Hennepin County Prosecutor Mary Moriarty has offered a plea arrangement that would reduce the penalty for second-degree murder to only one year in the county workhouse followed by 18 months of probation.
Limmer submitted a letter to Judge Burns this week and released the following statement:
“Quite honestly, I am shocked that any prosecutor would offer such a lenient sentence when compared to the senseless murder of a beloved son. I’m joining the Markey family and calling for Moriarty’s shockingly lenient plea deal to be rejected. The Minnesota Supreme Court has qualified Braveheart to be tried as an adult. The predatorial nature of this deadly attack does not warrant anything but the full measure of justice for the Markey family. To sentence differently will encourage more criminal activity,” said Limmer.
Last week, Judge Paul R. Scoggin, rejected another plea deal arranged by Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty.
