Senator Warren Limmer (R- Maple Grove) voted today to protect Minnesotans from hidden “junk fees” that are added to the actual cost of items and services that are frequently not disclosed until just before payment. These fees can sometimes cause significant and surprising price increases of a service or product.
“Under this economy, consumers are struggling with the costs of everything. Whether you are renting a car, dining out, or renewing your cable service, fees not disclosed up front can create major sticker shock at the bottom of the receipt,” Limmer said. “This bill will require more transparency and openness into the buying process so that no one is surprised by fees and added costs before it’s too late.”
The Federal Trade Commission is also reviewing the issue of junk fees and the bill clarifies that should the FTC weigh in, the federal rule or any law would supersede Minnesota state law.
The bill passed the Senate with broad bipartisan support and will be brought up in a conference committee to work out differences with the House version passed on April 11, 2024.
