Yesterday Governor Walz announced his supplemental budget, which spends over $225 million in fiscal years 24-27. Included in this number is an increase in spending of $26.6 million in FY 25-27. This will increase the structural deficit, which came to light in the February forecast.
“We found out last month that Minnesota is facing a deficit down the line, and instead of increasing spending at all, it’s important that we reconsider the budget and focus on fiscal responsibility and ensuring critical priorities are addressed,” said Senator Eric Pratt (R-Prior Lake). “We’re taking our state and its budget down an unsustainable path. Up to this point, single-party control has done nothing to address the looming structural deficit, which our state is facing as a direct result of their over-spending. I’m shocked that the Governor is proposing almost $200 million in new spending after a 40% increase in spending last year and $10 billion in new taxes. This isn’t sustainable – Minnesotans deserve to know that the government is utilizing taxpayer dollars responsibly. This proposal is the exact opposite. We need to get our budget back on track before it’s too late.”
