This week the Senate Transportation committee heard legislation authored by Senator Jason Rarick (R-Pine City) that funds the redesign and construction of Highway 73. SF-81 would specifically address portions of the highway south of Cromwell.
“This project is long overdue—funding for this road has been previously allocated, but has unfortunately also been removed twice,” said Rarick. “This road has seen many accidents and presents a safety hazard for those traveling through the area. These improvements are urgent, and it’s time we get this project to the finish line.”
Though this section of road serves as the main connector from I-35 in Moose Lake to Iron Range cities, this section of highway has not been upgraded or improved since 1933. The bill has broad support from local groups including the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, the Moose Lake Police Department, and the Cromwell-Wright Area Fire District.
Due to the necessity of the project, Carlton County Commissioner Gary Peterson and Dan Reed both testified in support of the bill.
The bill was held over for inclusion in the Trunk Highway Bonding bill.
