This week, legislation designating a portion of state Highway 23 between New London and Spicer as the “Ryane Clark Memorial Highway” wrapped up the committee process. The bill, authored by Senator Andrew Lang (R-Olivia), honors fallen Army Pfc. Ryane Clark. The legislation awaits a vote by the full Senate.

“Our communities – and our entire state and nation – are eternally grateful for Pfc. Clark’s sacrifice in service of his country,” said Senator Lang. “As a veteran myself, I know firsthand the sacrifices members of our military and military families make to keep our communities safe.”

Army Pfc. Ryane Clark, a native of New London, was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade in Shekhabad, Afghanistan during his 2010 deployment. Pfc. Clark was part of the 57th Engineering Company at Fort Bragg, N.C. Pfc. Clark was a 2007 graduate of New London-Spicer High School, where he participated in wrestling and was an Eagle Scout with Troop 228. He studied law enforcement at Alexandria Technical and Community College before joining the military, serving in the Army Unit 57th Sapper Company, 27th Combat Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne), 20th Combat Engineer Brigade (Combat), 18th Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

“Those who know Pfc. Clark can attest that he was a special young man – and a hero,” Senator Lang continued. “Designating the stretch of Highway 23 between New London and Spicer as the ‘Ryane Clark Memorial Highway’ is a small gesture, but it will ensure Pfc. Clark’s legacy is cemented in our community forever. I know I will take a sense of solace and pride when I drive past the signs along the highway.”

Senator Andrew Lang, of Olivia, represents District 17, including communities in Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Renville, and Swift counties. He serves as vice chair of the Senate Veterans and Military Affairs Finance and Policy Committee.
