Sen. Benson on President’s announced reimportation plan to lower drug costs

Senator Michelle Benson released the following statement on the President’s changes announced today to allow American’s to import lower-cost prescriptions drugs from Canada. The practice, known as “reimportation” was first suggested in Minnesota when Governor Pawlenty testified in Congress in 2003.

“Reimportation was and is my focus since session ended,” said Senator Benson. “This is a major opportunity for us to fundamentally improve the lives of every Minnesotan whose life depends on prescription drugs. Removing federal barriers leads to innovation that will directly impact and assist Minnesotans. The Trump administration has taken the issue seriously and I am grateful for the change. As we move this idea forward over the interim, I hope the Governor will support the Senate’s requests so we can implement reimportation as soon as possible. If we can work together, Minnesotans won’t need to caravan to Canada for their drugs, they will be able to visit their local pharmacy and get lower prices,” concluded Benson.
