The federal government extended Minnesota’s waiver to comply with federal REAL ID standards until at least October 10, 2018, at which point Minnesota driver’s licenses will be REAL ID compliant, announced Senator Carla Nelson [R-Rochester]. In the meantime, the move will allow for Minnesotans to use their current driver’s licenses to fly, enter federal buildings, and access military bases without need for any further documentation.
“I am thankful that Minnesotans can finally put the issue of REAL ID to rest,” said Sen. Nelson. “After a bipartisan effort last session to pass REAL ID compliance in our state, finally Minnesotans can travel worry free.”
The State of Minnesota will begin to issue REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards in October of 2018. It is important to note that all Minnesota citizens will continue to have the choice to have a non-REAL ID driver’s license.
Minnesotans who do not want to wait until October 2018 may apply for an Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL). Already compliant with REAL ID standards, an EDL functions as a U.S. Passport Card, allowing for Minnesota residents to re-enter the U.S. at its land or seaports when returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean, with just their driver’s license. Rochester is one of only 14 DMVs in the state that issue EDLs. However, it costs an additional $15 for the card holder and requires multiple documents to apply, such as a U.S. passport, original birth certificate, original social security card, a utility bill, and a pay stub.
