Minnesota’s 5G network made possible by Osmek legislation that created framework
On Wednesday, April 3, Senator David Osmek (R-Mound) joined cellular industry and community leaders at the Verizon Store at the Mall of America for the activation of Minnesota’s 5G wireless network. On the same day, Minneapolis and Chicago became the first, and currently only, locations in the world with 5G wireless service. 5G is the next generation of wireless data networks, with Internet speeds that are up to 100 times faster than current 4G networks. This became possible in Minnesota because of bipartisan legislation chief-authored by Senator Osmek that established a framework for telecommunications companies to develop their 5G networks in our state. The measure was signed into law in 2017 by Governor Mark Dayton as a provision within the comprehensive jobs and economic growth bill.
“Through innovative forward thinking, the Minnesota Legislature worked across the aisle to create a framework for 5G wireless development in our state,” said Senator Osmek. “Now, Minnesota is leading the world in the sophistication of our wireless network. From the Internet to more quickly enabling the arrival of self-driving vehicles, this ensures our state will stay a worldwide leader in innovation and technology.”
Currently, Minnesota’s 5G service is concentrated in the Downtown area of Minneapolis, including inside and around U.S. Bank Stadium, the site of this weekend’s NCAA men’s basketball Final Four. It is also available around various Twin Cities landmarks; however, a consumer must have a 5G enabled device to access the service.
