Senate Republicans issued the following statements upon DNR approval of the NorthMet permit to mine:
“Over the Iron Range’s 130-year mining history, we’ve proven that a strong economy and good jobs can exist while protecting Northern Minnesota’s pristine environment and clean water. The approval of the PolyMet mining permit means the world to Iron Rangers and their families, who stand to benefit from new, stable jobs, increased state tax revenues, and billions of dollars for the school trust,” said Sen. Justin Eichorn (R-Grand Rapids). “The new mine will even help us diversify energy generation in Minnesota, as copper and nickel are necessary components of solar panels and wind turbines.”
“As a former Iron Ranger, I’m elated to see the PolyMet project finally moving forward. This will have a huge economic impact for families on the Range; it will change their lives for the better,” said Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa). “It’s unfortunate we had to spend 15 years fighting for it.”
