Senator Bruce Anderson: Democrat deficit surges to $6 billion

Friends and neighbors,

On Thursday, March 6, Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) released its annual February revenue forecast, providing information and an outlook for the state’s financial picture. The February forecast will serve as a guide for the Minnesota Legislature in creating the upcoming two-year budget before the constitutionally mandated session deadline on May 19, 2025.

Alarmingly, the latest forecast shows a smaller $456 million surplus at the end of 2026 and a larger $6 billion deficit by 2029. The forecast numbers do not account for any new spending, meaning any additional spending bills passed this legislative session will further increase the deficit.

This deficit stems from years of irresponsible fiscal management and wasteful misuse of taxpayer dollars. Under the control of the Democrat trifecta, Minnesota’s state government grew by nearly 40%. At the same time, taxes and fees were increased by $10 billion, making life more expensive for Minnesotans. The state now has some of the highest individual taxes and the 46th worst state and local tax burden in the nation.

This session, we need to rein in bloated government spending and put Minnesotans first!

Constituents at the Capitol

We had a remarkable week filled with meaningful meetings with constituents!

This past Monday, I had the privilege of meeting with constituents from Buffalo and Monticello. We had an immensely productive conversation about safeguarding the funding for the Arts. Their unwavering commitment to this cause is certainly encouraging!

Additionally, I had a valuable discussion with representatives from the Wright County Soil and Water Conservation District. They shared their budget priorities and discussed key policies regarding soil health and water management.

Furthermore, I had a productive discussion with several city council members from Clearwater who were a part of the League of Minnesota Cities’ Day on the Hill. They provided important insight into the challenges and policies concerning water infrastructure, employment and housing.

I was also able to have a productive discussion with Melissa Stenson, the city administrator of South Haven. We had an excellent discussion on the South Haven water and sewer infrastructure bonding project and many other priorities.

My office is always open to constituents, and I encourage you to visit the next time you are in St. Paul. Your insight is crucial as we collaborate to highlight the issues that are most important to our community.
