The Minnesota Senate’s local government committee on Tuesday approved a bill authored by Senator Mike Goggin (R-Red Wing) that would authorize Lake City to establish its own port authority, which would allow the community to capitalize on new development opportunities and build on economic growth.
“Lake City is a fantastic tourist spot,” said Sen. Goggin. “The improvements to Ohuta Beach, the access to Lake Pepin, the rebuild of Highway 61, and all the wonderful shops and restaurants have made this small town a great destination. Establishing a port authority will help them take their community to even greater heights by opening up a new world of economic opportunity. I am excited for what their future holds.”
Port authorities are similar to economic development authorities in that they both focus on economic development, but port authorities have more expansive capabilities. Several cities to the north and south of Lake City, including Hastings, Red Wing, Winona, and Wabasha, all have port authorities.
