Senator Mike Goggin (R-Red Wing) issued the following statement on the passage of House File 3, the REAL ID compliance bill, by the Senate.
“Minnesotans have been waiting for a REAL ID fix for a long time, but they no longer have to worry — you will be able to fly and enter federal facilities hassle-free next year thanks to our overwhelmingly bipartisan REAL ID bill.
“When I first came to the Senate I, like a lot of Minnesotans, wasn’t sold on REAL ID – particularly with data privacy at the front of everyone’s mind. That’s why it was important that our bill respects those who had concerns in two ways: first, we added an amendment requiring the Minnesota legislature to approve any changes made to REAL ID at the federal level; second, we made sure to give Minnesotans the choice of what ID card they want. Our bill provides a two-tier system – if you don’t want a REAL ID, you can keep using your standard license or purchase an enhanced ID. It’s a compromise that should satisfy everyone.”
