Last week, the Minnesota Senate passed legislation that allows Castlewood Golf Course in Forest Lake to sell full strength alcohol after years of being limited to 3.2 percent ABV sales. The provision, which was included in the omnibus liquor bill that awaits the governor’s signature, was authored by Senator Karin Housley (R-St. Marys Point).
“I’m proud to have secured this important provision for the Castlewood Golf Course and the City of Forest Lake. After years of being able to sell only 3.2 percent beer, the golf course can finally enter the 21st century with the sales of full-strength beer, wine, and spirits. People will finally be able to enjoy a beer or a glass of wine on the course or in the pro shop,” said Senator Housley. “This allows the course to remain competitive and is something the City has wanted for a long time. And as with all municipal alcohol sales, the funds allow the city to make investments in other important efforts in Forest Lake.”
The legislation is expected to be signed into law, though the Forest Lake City Council must still approve the on-sale intoxicating liquor license before it can be granted. The license will allow the golf course to sell full strength beer, wine, and liquor on the grounds, including on the golf course, pro shop, and any potential clubhouse or restaurant. It prohibits the sale of any alcohol in the parking lot and sales will be conducted in accordance with all applicable laws.
Senator Karin Housley represents Forest Lake, Stillwater, and the surrounding St. Croix Valley in the Minnesota Senate. She serves as chair of the Senate Family Care and Aging Committee and is an assistant majority leader.
