(St. Paul, MN) – Learner’s permit written tests were becoming day trips for many parents and guardians as the testing backlog at DVS piled to astronomical levels. Thanks to legislation spearheaded by Senator Karin Housley (R-St. Mary’s Point) in an effort to remedy the growing issue, the Class D Knowledge Test will be offered online starting October 8, 2020. 

“It’s gratifying to see inefficiency in government fixed in a tangible way,” said Sen. Housley. “I kept hearing stories of parents traveling halfway across the state for their child’s test after months of waiting for the appointment. Home testing fits the state’s pivot towards remote work and education and is guaranteed to relieve stress on both local offices and test-takers. I’m very pleased DVS is taking a modern route. The excitement of getting a learner’s permit will return to the process!”

According to the newly-enacted legislation, guardians, parents, or an adult must be present to administer the test. Third-party testing locations will also be available for those who wish to proceed with an in-person test. These locations include deputy registrar offices, driver’s education programs, and other community organizations across the state.
