Senator Mary Kiffmeyer (R-Big Lake) has been appointed to the Vehicle Registration Task Force. Earlier this year, the Transportation committee included funding for the task force in their omnibus bill. Created to study methods of vehicle registration, the members will examine a variety of tab fee options such as flat rate, weight-based, value based, age-based, and two-year registration.
“We accomplished significant reform this year as we tackled issues surrounding MNLARS, but there is still a lot of work to be done,” said Senator Kiffmeyer. “I began to research the root of the problems within Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) and found that our extremely complicated fee calculation is the worst in the country. The system has made it difficult to gather data, difficult to program, and difficult for purchasers to understand. I authored the amendment to create this task force because Minnesotans deserve excellent service for a fair and simple fee.”
Senator Kiffmeyer will serve on the Task Force until January 16, 2020.
“By 2020, I hope we will have a plan in place and a developed proposal to put in action,” said Senator Kiffmeyer. “I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of this initiative for reform that will reorganize significant operations of DVS.”
