Senator Mary Kiffmeyer (R-Big Lake) presented and passed a bill to protect state lottery winners’ privacy. This bill will protect the privacy of Minnesotans who win $10,000 or more in the state lottery to avoid harassment and solicitation from potentially sinister individuals.
“Winning the lottery should be an exciting event shared with close friends and family,” Kiffmeyer said. “Publicly announcing the winners puts them at risk for harassment, solicitation, and even murder in some cases. Having the option to stay anonymous is easy policy meant to protect Minnesotans from any potential harm during what should be an extremely happy time.”
Studies show that winners in other states have been targeted, leading to personal harm or murder over their financial gain. This bill not only protects lottery winners but will also encourage more Minnesotans to participate without fear.
The bill passed with bipartisan support and awaits approval from the House and Governor Walz.
