Statement from Sen. Farnsworth on local layoffs in the mining industry

Senator Robert Farnsworth (R-Hibbing) released the following statement after the announcement that Cliffs will idle Minorca Mine and Hibbing Taconite, resulting in 600 workers being laid off. This statement follows confirmation that workers have been informed of these changes.

“This is tough news today. I have been in touch with Cleveland Cliffs leadership as well as union officials, and we are working together to take care of the employees and their families. It’s unfortunate that the news was leaked to the media before the workers were informed by the company.

“The domestic steel industry and its workers have suffered for the last four years in the Biden economy. This past election brings an opportunity for change at both the state and federal capitols to improve our economy, support workers, and increase domestic manufacturing and production.”
